The 2019 Conexxus Annual Conference in Nashville was the most heavily attended in its history, buzzing with both people and ideas.  Attendees convened as the convenience-store industry is increasingly being surrounded by disruptors, ranging from increasing interchange fees and the growth of dollar stores in the face of a shrinking c-sore footprint to the emergence of CBD, cannabis and tech driven consumer trends.....

Change is never easy. When it comes to the convenience channel, the same can be said about digital transformation.  "Digital is not just a marketing channel or a fad," said Ed Dzadovsky, vice president, North America IT, at Circle K, "We are trying to figure out what it means for us." .....

The petroleum industry is having a hard time with a crucial EMV deadline. Not many gas stations are expected to make it. Currently, about 30% of all gas stations in the United States are estimated to have EMV card readers, to be testing them, or to be starting to install, according to industry experts. Of that segment, just 1% to 2% are considered to be EMV-complete.....

Cash was once considered king, but times have changed as payment options like mobile wallets, Apple Pay and Venmo have grown in popularity. The problem is that today's payment system has not kept up with the times.....

What began as a plan to push convenience-store dispensers to EMV compliance has become a drawn-out, expensive and complicated problem for stores selling gasoline. Visa, Mastercard and other card companies managing EMV  eventually pushed a 2017 deadline further back to 2020 when Conexxus and other industry advocates illustrated the burden the liability shift was placing on retailers.....

This month’s Top Women in Convenience (TWIC) Talk subject is Jenny Bullard, former chief information officer at Flash Foods and now manager of member engagement at Conexxus, a nonprofit organization dedicated to standards, technology innovation and advocacy for the convenience industry. In 2015, Bullard was one of the five women celebrated by TWIC as Women of the Year.....
